First Thermonuclear Reactor May Be Elaborated in Russia Russia and EEC countries would strive for the right to construct a
thermonuclear reactor on their territory, as was claimed by V.Glukhikh,
the director of the Yefremov Research Institute of Electric and Physical
Equipment (YRIEPE). He said that the total cost of the reactor development
project is estimated to be 8 billion dollars. The project is being
elaborated by EEC countries, Russia, USA, and Japan. On behalf of Russia
it is the YRIEPE that is currently taking part in the elaboration of a 1.5
gigawatt reactor sample. As was said by academician Zhores Alfiorov,
a Nobelist in physics, "after having arrived at a corresponding political
decision it will not possibly take more than 20 years to construct a
thermonuclear reactor." And the political decision has been arrived at
lately.
On February 21 the Russian government issued the decree having a special
purpose aiming at the federal program development on the subject.
According to this decree, the project which is called "International
Thermonuclear Reactor (ITER)" is to be elaborated in the years 2002 -
2005. Ministry of Atomic Energy was assigned to be the State Customer,
being at the same time the orization in charge of the decree
execution.
The project is to be submitted for consideration in the Government in the
first half- year 2001.
Russian scientists have lately decided to declassify a number of
technological approaches in thermonuclear physics. Thus, the concept of
the "Burst Combustion Pile" has become a property of the scientific and
engineering masses. Owing to certain information leakage as far back as
1960s, the configuration of the thermonuclear setup proved to be patented
not only by Russia but also by some other countries. It is only Russia,
however, that possesses now the secret know-how for creation "miniature
atomic bombs", small charges of energy needed for the setup to be
initiated. The "Burst Combustion Pile" operates on the principle of
deuterium fusion initiated by such a small charge of energy. An industrial
setup would be as powerful as 30,000,000 kilowatt which is equivalent to
the power of 20-30 atomic stations. To create such a setup it would be
needed some 3 billion dollars. An industrial power setup on the "Burst
Combustion Pile" concept might be constructed in Russia before long.
Russian specialists estimate the cost of energy produced at such a station
to be 1 cent a kilowatt/hour which is strikingly cheep.
