Space is Ours!
On 4 October, 44 years ago, Russia opened the space road for the mankind.
For thousands of years terrestrials (Sumerians, Chineses, Babylonians,
Assyrians, Armenians, proto-Slavs, and other peoples) had been watching
the sky and mentioning nothing of the kind. The phenomenon unknown before
- a flying and uncombustible star - struck imagination of people in all
countries and on every continent. The world stood still in expectation.
Myths and legends, gods and ghosts made room for a Russian man. The
miracle was created by our compatriots making use of a rocket R7.
On 25 August 1957 there was the first successful flight of an
intercontinental ballistic missile (IBM) R7 which was worked out in the
Special Design Office-1 under the Head Designer S.P.Koroliov. A powerful
cooperation of scientific and design institutions was formed through
insistent efforts of S.P.Koroliov, owing to his remarkable organizational
activities. This cooperative agglomeration provided necesary inquiries and
designed devices and systems which were a new step in the rocket
technology. The rocket R7 (8K71) was projected and exploited as a military
one, it had efficiency that allowed launching considerable load into
space, on a near-Earth orbit. Therefore, successful trials of 8K71 as a
ballistic missile were followed by its employment for the launching of
early artificial satellites of the Earth.
On 4 October 1957 the first satellite sent its call signals over the
ether. It was the beginning of a cosmic era in the mankind's civilization.
The rocket itself was named "sputnik" which stands for a "satellite" in
Russian.
