New Space Carrier Rocket "Mikron"

"Mikron" is a unique carrier rocket which may be launched from a MiG-31C fighter in order to put a small satellite into orbit. "Mikron" has been designed in the "Astra" Centre of the Moscow Aviation Institute. The rocket engines work on mixture of butyl caoutchouc and liquid oxygen and allow to launch a satellite with a mass of 50-150 kg into orbit. ITAR-TASS informs with reference to the "Astra" Centre head, Gennady Malyshev: a microcarrier is fixed in the bottom part of the MiG-31 fighter fuselage. After reaching a height of some 21 km, a "Micron" is released from the airplane, its own rocket engine being put into action at the same time. Malyshev says, such a scheme allows one to make cost of putting 1 kg useful load into orbit more than three times lower. Moreover, controlled reentry of an exhausted first stage into a given region allows residents to avoid safely debris fall. A launch site as well as a subsequent point of putting satellite into orbit being in the fighter pilot's radio visibility zone, satellite delivery to a needed point of an orbit may be guaranteed at a high accuracy level, said G.Malyshev.
