November 24, 1999, Moscow, Russia The Group of companies "Elbrus" hold a
press-conference in the Round Hall of the President Hotel. The press-conference was
devoted to the results the Group has reached after the first year of its activity. The
Group informed of its main achievements and the events impressive by their scale and
richness.
Professor Boris A. Babayan, a Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of
Science, Director to the Institute of Microprocessors, reported of the following critical
milestones of the year:
under the order from the Russian Government a SPARC compatible microprocessor V8 was
developed;
based on this microprocessor a workstation has been developed, manufactured and
currently is under debugging;
acquired are all licenses required for distribution of the computer system in the
country; Solaris operating system is localized;
the Group has entered into a number of important contracts with the Russian partners
and worked out the main basis for cooperation with some system building industries of RF
targeted at the development of computer systems based on the domestic work station;
the designers team has made a considerable break-through in the creation of the E2K
microprocessor based on EPIC architecture. The logic design of the microprocessor has been
finalized. The work to secure the IP rights for the E2K has been done, much progress has
been attained in the solution of the problem connected with the further financing of the
project. As Prof. Babayan noted, in this year some the revolutionary decisions were made
which actually mean the gain for a substantial period of time against the competitors
(such contention became possible after the basic parameters of Merced/Itanium and
Transmeta projects have been announced).
The range and scope of works with such major partners as Sun Microsystems, AVANT!
Corp. and Harris Corp. have considerably expanded. The Group has got new partners as well.
